A Long Way Gone

Why should we care about what happens in the rest of the world?

I think we have a moral obligation to care about what happens in the rest of the world. We all need help from one another and if one part of the world is in trouble, another part is kind of obligated to help out. It’s just the right thing to do. Also if something were to happen on the side that helped before then it would sort of equal out.

In a long way gone, there is a civil war that tears the country apart. Many people face loss and tragedy and it’s not their fault. This was just one part of the whole world that erupted in violence and needed some help. Peaceful villages never expected to be burned and totally lost. Families couldn’t anticipate that they would never see each other all together and alive again. Countries with the power could have stepped in and fought the ones hurting innocent people.

People who lived in Sierra Leone but weren’t affected by the war until later times took in wounded people and orphans until they were forced to leave. They gave families a place to sleep and food to survive. It was the right thing to do. A lot of these people never thought that the war would reach them and weren’t worried. These people cared about what was going on enough to shelter the needy that came from a different area of their country. I feel like that is similar to caring about what happens in the rest of the world. For most in that country, I bet they don’t travel to the other side of their country often so really, it’s extremely far to go and almost a different part of the world to them.

In blood diamond, other areas of the world wanted diamonds and Sierra Leone was able to produce them. Really, no one knew where their diamonds were coming from until the woman published an article about the civil war and everything that went on in Sierra Leone to find the diamonds. After the public in other areas were informed, they thought it was wrong that people were dying for such a cause and protested against it.

I really think we should worry about what goes on in the rest of the world because it’s the right thing to do, just how people took in others who needed help in Sierra Leone. It was the moral thing to do to care how diamonds were being found and protesting the people who were making under the table deals. It also shouldn’t really matter how near or far they are, just that they need help and you would hope they would help you in a situation where you need help.
